ABOUT THE COMMITTEE
TO STOP THE ANDREW.

OUR STRATEGY.

As mentioned elsewhere on this site (click here for information), constructing The Andrew will require a zoning change.

In Chicago's 48th Ward, requests for zoning changes must first be voted upon by the 48th Ward Zoning and Planning Committee, which was formed by Alderman Mary Ann Smith to advise her on such matters.

If the Zoning and Planning Committee votes in favor of a change, then Alderman Smith endorses the request before the City Council. In Chicago, it is unheard of for a zoning change supported by an alderman not to pass the City Council.

The 48th Ward Zoning and Planning Committee consists of delegates from 57 organizations, including all the larger condominium associations, all the block clubs, and a variety of civic organizations. It also includes some outside-the-Ward members, such as Loyola University.

Our strategy, quite simply, is to influence these delegates to vote against The Andrew when it comes before them. We plan to do this through gathering petition signatures, and contacting as many delegates as possible individually.

We do not know exactly when the proposal for The Andrew will come before the Zoning and Planning Committee. However, it cannot happen before the November meeting of the Committee, and might happen as late as January or February, 2008. But obviously, we have a great deal of work to do before then.

OUR LEADERS.

OUR MEMBERS.

The Committee to Stop The Andrew was formed September 3, 2007, by a group of concerned residents of The Statesman, 5601 N. Sheridan Road.

Since that time, our membership has grown rapidly. To date, the Committee has more 30 individual members. While most come from The Statesman, a surprising number come from Hollywood Towers, The Atelier, and The Edgewater Beach Apartments. In addition, the following buildings have joined as building members:

  • The Statesman (5601 N. Sheridan Road)
  • Lakeshore Tower (5600 N. Sheridan Road)
  • 5630 N. Sheridan Road
  • The Atelier (5556 N. Sheridan Road)

Membership in the Committee is free for both individuals and buildings. However, building members may be asked to contribute to the Committee's expenses. If you'd like to join, please click here.
